Reducing administrative burdens on businesses

Since 2001 reducing administrative burdens on businesses has been a central part of Denmark’s set of forward-looking reforms to sustain the positive economic performance of the recent years.

A programme on reduction of administrative burdens on businesses is being implemented with the stated goal of a 25 pct. reduction in 2010. By March 2009, the reductions amount to 16 pct. In March 2009, the government presented an ambitious action plan to achieve the remaining 9 pct. in 2010.

A key tool in the programme is the ‘AMVAB-method’ (equivalent to the Standard Cost Model), which facilitates the measurement of regulatory burdens on businesses. In recent years, the programme has increased focus on perceived administrative burdens. To address this issue, the Burden Hunter Projects helps to identify innovative ideas and pinpoints regulation that is perceived as burdensome by businesses. This is done by observing typical administrative practices in the companies and interviewing the companies affected by regulation.
